PSAlter Support Info

This page will contain up-to-date information on support for PSAlter, including known and commonly encountered problems.

This page updated: 28 May 2001.

PSAlter 1.6

This release is now available free to registered users. Registered users can download from http://www.quite.com/psalter/special/. Please see the release notes. The major new feature is that PSAlter is at last a true 32-bit program. As a result it can use long file names, and should be 2-3 times faster.

Please see the release notes for more detail. There is also a detailed list of bugs fixed by 1.6.

PSAlter 1.52

This bug-fix release is now available. Registered users should contact us if they would like to obtain it.

PSAlter 1.5

This major new release was shipped July 1997 to all registered users.

PSAlter 1.01

Since PSAlter 1.0 was released a number of problems have come to light. These probably won't affect most users (but see the note on PPST, below). PSAlter 1.01 has fixed most problems. You can check this detailed bug list for further information.

The PSAlter 1.01 update was sent in August 1996 automatically and free of charge to all registered users. If you forgot to register please let us know and make sure you tell us to send you 1.01. Don't forget!

NT 4.0

Something changed in Windows NT 4.0 Beta 2, which causes PSAlter 1.0 to crash whenever an attempt is made to show a space in a Windows font. PSAlter 1.01 fixes this serious problem.

PPST

PPST is the PostScript Processor Speed Test, designed to benchmark PostScript interpreters. It has revealed several problems with PSAlter, all of which were fixed in 1.01.

One additional problem is that PPST did not give correct results even when the bugs were fixed. This is because the 'usertime' operator, used for timing, was a fake and does not actually return values suitable for timing.

This is mentioned in PSAlter's help. The reason is that some PostScript programs have been found that use 'usertime' to wait (e.g. for manual feed) and this simply delays PSAlter. However, we felt that having an operator for doing timings was sufficiently valuable that usertime is now implemented properly.
