So you ask, What is JDF?
According to CIP4, and they should know, JDF is a comprehensive XML-based file format for end-to-end job ticket specifications combined with a message description standard and message interchange protocol. Glad you asked?
Put another way, JDF is designed to make the exchange of information between different applications and systems much easier.
It is intended to enable the entire industry, including media, design, graphic arts, on demand and e-commerce companies to implement and work with individual workflow solutions, no matter where the source material has originated from.
Quite felt it was important to be in on the ground floor of what could potentially become the next standard way of working in our industry. This also gives us the opportunity to influence the development of JDF standards to make sure they really serve the needs of their end users.
CIP4 has much more detailed information about JDF and how the organisation sees this new way of working fitting into the industry and also the specific role for CIP4 in the promotion of JDF. All this and more on the CIP4 web site.
