Quite A Box Of Tricks

You can download and use Quite A Box Of Tricks. This is the full software, but it will work for you in a demonstration mode. The main effect of this is that all your pages will be marked with a large X. Take care not to save over, and ruin, your original files.

This contains three plug-in files and an online manual. All files should be copied to the Acrobat plug-ins folder, as described below.

Installation

If you have problems following any part of these instructions, please contact us before you start.

1. Make sure you have what you need

You should be running Acrobat 4.0, 4.05, 5.0, 5.05, 6.0/7.0/8.0 Professional or 6.0/7.0 Standard on a compatible MacOS system (Acrobat 6.x is not compatible with Mac OS versions older than X.2.). Acrobat 5.05 or later will run natively in Mac OS X.

Download one of the files above. Make sure you know which folder you have downloaded to.

2. Extract the files

The Quite A Box Of Tricks download contains the files Quite A Box Of Tricks, Quite A Box Of Tricks OSX, Quite A Box Of Tricks.acroplugin and Quite A Box Of Tricks Guide.

You will need to use a program such as Stuffit Expander to extract these files.

• Your browser might have automatically extracted the files. If so you will see them.
• Otherwise, start Stuffit Expander and use File > Expand to open the file you downloaded. This will write the two files you need. In many cases it will create a folder. For instance, if it expands qi180.sit it may create qi180 folder and put the files in that.

3. Run the installer

In the folder with the plug-ins you should also see Install Quite Plugins. Simply double click on this to install your plug-ins. The installer will try to locate your copy of Acrobat, but if it fails you can click the Browse button to locate it yourself.

(Expert users can also install the plug-ins by manually copying all files to the plug-ins folder).

4. Start Acrobat

If all is well, you will now have a new menu item Plug-ins > Quite A Box Of Tricks, and a new i icon with an arrow on your toolbar (in Acrobat 6.0 you may need to use View > Toolbars > Advanced editing to see this). Select either one and you should see a window About Quite A Box Of Tricks. Click Run Demo to start working, or click Guide to start reading the online guide.

Removing the plug-in

Re-run the installer, and you can choose to uninstall.

(Expert users can also manually remove all files from the plug-ins folders).

Upgrading between Acrobat 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0

When you install a new version of Acrobat, the location of plug-ins will be different, and you need to copy the Quite Imposing plug-in to the new location (see step 3 or 4 above).

If you want to settings, this is automatic if upgrading from Acrobat 6.0 or later, as the files are not stored within Acrobat's folders. To preserve settings when upgrading from Acrobat 4 or 5, just copy the folder called Quite from the old Plug-ins folder to the new Plug-ins folder, or if upgrading to 6.0/7.0/8.0, copy this Quite folder to your personal Preferences folder HOME/Library/Preferences. This is where the settings for all Quite plug-ins are held.

Note for Windows users

If you are downloading the Macintosh plug-ins from a machine other than a Macintosh, you should be able to download the file and transfer it to a Macintosh. Most Macintoshes can now read floppy disks formatted on a Windows PC. If the file name is changed in transit, don't worry, you can change it back once you have the file on the Macintosh. You must already have a copy of Stuffit expander on your Macintosh; it is not usually possible to download and transfer that. Do not "un-stuff" the file on a Windows PC; that won't work.
